You might have heard about the firewall especially when you work most of the time on internet. You might also have heard about firewall when you have fast internet connection into your home. The security issues are same for the small as well as for the large networks. You can protect your home network by suing firewall from dangerous websites and hackers. The firewall works as barriers to keep destructive viruses and programs away from your computer. It is important for the users to know that how the firewall works and what kind of threats can be protected by the firewall.

The firewall software is actually used to filter the information coming form the internet connection into your computer. The packet of information will not be allowed to enter the computer if it is flagged by the filters. You should be able to know that how data travels on internet and how firewall can help the computers to protect them. There might be hundreds of computer in large companies which are connected to each other over network. The company will also have internet connections. All these computers are directly accessible by other on internet without firewall. The users can also use FTP if he can probe these computers. The hackers will easily get into the network if some user has made a mistake and leaves a security hole.

The firewall is placed with every internet connection in the companies. The security rules are implemented by the firewall like there might be rule that only one user will receive public FTP traffic and in this case FTP connection will be allowed to only that user. FTP servers rules can also be set up by the companies. The number of employees connected to the websites can be controlled by the companies as well. The companies will have tremendous control over network with the help of firewall. The in or out side traffic from network can be controlled by the firewall in the following ways.
Packet filtering
All the packets of information are analyzed by the filters in the firewall. The packets which go through the filters will be sent to the requesting systems and all other will be discarded.
Proxy device
The firewall will retrieve the information from internet and will send to the requesting systems and vice versa.
Stateful inspection
It is a new method in which contents of packets are not examined but these packets are compared with database of trusted information. The information traveling from the firewall to the outside are monitored for specific defining characteristics. The information will then be compared to these characteristics and if there is match in this comparison then information will be allowed to go through.
